HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

Some may be wondering why it's even important or necessary to define your personal style? A well-defined style shows your self-confidence and solidifies your knowledge and people's knowledge of you. I want to talk about how very important it is to have your definite style but first... it's been a while there huh! Lots have been happening, and I know a lot of you want a life lately post but my last post was a life lately post so I thought we would switch things up and I would publish a life lately post some other time.

So back to the question of personal style..

Beret trendBeret trend This is a question I've been getting a lot of lately. What words comes to mind if anyone were to try to describe my personal style? What are the textures fabrics, silhouettes, colors, patterns I like? How do I best describe my style with actual adjectives? How do my cloths make me feel? What shapes and silhouette do I see? While this may seem like a straight forward questions in need of straight forward answers, I found that frankly It took a lot of time and thinking for me to answer even some of them and finally get a grasp on how I want to be seen and what kind of style I wish to identify with. So if you are having the same problem, then you are welcome...

HERE ARE SOME USEFUL TIPS ON HOW TO GET MORE CLARITY ON YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

  • TAKE A GOOD LOOK INTO YOUR CLOSET: Really take a good look at your closet, you will find you can actually learn more about yourself if you pay attention.
  • CREATE A LIST OF THE CLOTHING PIECES YOU GET EXCITED ABOUT WEARING: Do you get excited about wearing a skirt? Is there a particular trend you are always excited about wearing?
  • BE REALISTIC AND PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS: Don't have the abs for it? Then crop tops are probably not the pieces to stock up on?
  • SELECT OUT THE PIECES YOU NEVER WEAR OR HARDLY EVER REACH FOR: That jeans or that blouse that has been collecting dust on the top shelf? It's so expensive and so pretty but you never reach for it? I think it may be time to donate it to goodwill?
  • TAKE NOTE OF THE ITEMS THAT ARE ALWAYS ON REPEAT: Are you always reaching out for that same bubu or that same dress, even though your closet is filled with other clothes?
  • LOOK FOR SIMILARITIES IN YOUR BASICS: Do you have more stripped tees than necessary? Are you always buying the same color of clothing?
  • BE REAL ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE NEEDS: Are you a teacher and yet you got more suits than actual clothing? Are you a banker styling denim every other day? Could it be that you need more work wears in your closet?
  • WHO ARE YOUR STYLE ICONS/INSPIRATIONS: Sometimes, taking a good look at the people you are always looking up to helps too.

Do you have a clear answer for all or most of the personal style questions above?

Then you should have a good understanding about how you think you can define your personal style. Don't forget style goes beyond clothing too, it encompasses accessories, and details, even your beauty routine. Are you more of a skin care person or a makeup person? What kind of makeup are you comfortable with?

The next thing to understand is you can't define your style with a single word. Style is much more complicated than that and a person may have more than one personality depending on the occasion or their lifestyle. Ultimately, your style can be defined by the most obvious basics you possess, your lifestyle choices and your most obvious personality.

Even though my style is still evolving, I'm excited to be able to pin point a few notable words than can describe me.

I do not have a personal style, I know nothing about fashion, but meh! I do want to improve on this. I do find a lot of fashion sense appealing but I am probably not ready or do not know how to dive in.

It was a great read; I like how fluid you're with your writing. Now, back to the content of your post: I don't think I have a definitive personal style, I guess it's something I'd have to work on although I think SIMPLE does it for me.

  • Salmah says:

Thank you amaka, lol. My head is swelling! But please what kind of style is secretarial?

  • Salmah says:

Thank you gift! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. The truth is if your wardrobe is filled with stuff that you never use, then it’s time for a make over.. now I know that may be expensive so I’m coming back with a post soon on how to give your wardrobe a makeover on a budget!

  • Salmah says:

Deedee, everyone has a style, the trick is to complete the exercise in this post to help in figuring it out! Let me know what you think is your style after you complete it!

  • Salmah says:

Yay one of my favourite bloggers is back! Welcome ohh! I really love this outfit, it is so you. Your photos are also really nice so kudos to the photographer! A nice little write up. I would say words to describe my style are - random, comfortable, covered up, secretarial, reserved lol.

Please keep the posts coming! I've missed you dearly

Hey Salmah, I love the way you styled your outfit in this post. Looks like you found your personal style and it really suits you. I honestly don't know what my personal style is but I know I cherish comfortable clothes, I am a sucker for jeans and wide leg pants. Recently I am falling in love with kimonos and I think monochrome stripes are one of the best things in the world.. Sadly, while typing this I realised my wardrobe is filled with a lot of things I probably won't like and maybe that's why recently I have gone back to chanting "I've nothing to wear" anytime I want to go out.. I am definitely going to take the quiz above and try to define my personal style..

    Very helpful post

Awesome post and amazing pictures. Do I even have a personal style?

  • DeeDee says:

I trust you would be here.

  • Salmah says:

Thank you kene. And oh yes, would definitely tag u as a preppy kinda person. An inbetweener

  • Kené says:

I'd like to define my personal style as preppy; in the sense that it's not overly formal (as in the case of suits and ties), and it's not downright casual. In as much as i like the solid look that comes with being formal, i also like the ease with casual fit.
    .
I love the look and the styling. the black ensemble and the overcoat gives this solid look that i've not seen on you before .
Amazing stuff all the same .

Since Safari refused to open this link, I decided to copy in another browser and guess what, I saw no pictures. I told myself, ‘There’s no way Salmah would post such an interesting article like this without picture’. And I had to refresh and refresh.

Girl, your style is amazing! And your smile ???

Do I have a personal style? I would say basic. I love comfy outfit, good jean and a lovely tee. And when it’s work time, I love a well cut pant and comfortable top to match.

    Interesting post.

  • Salmah says:

Thank you for reading khairah.. and yes, comfort is definitely key!!

  • Khairah says:

Lovely Read??!! I would definitely say comfy, minimalist yet elegant. But comfort is simply key

  • Salmah says:

Lol definitely not naked! I’ve found a lot of people choose comfort over hassle these days! It’s amazing.

  • Susanspecs says:

Babes, your smile is everything!!! I'm not sure I have a personal style, but if I were to choose, I would say effortless and comfortable. As long as I'm not naked and I'm comfortable, I'm good.
